Yellow taxis can be hailed anywhere in the 5 boroughs of New York City. Yellow taxi drivers are required to take you to any destination in New York City, Westchester and Nassau counties, and Newark Airport.
Important note: the fare is always on the meter, and it can be paid with cash or any major credit card. Please make sure to request a receipt from your driver when you reach your destination. For more information on yellow taxis, please click here.
Livery cabs, also known as black cars or community cars, cannot be hailed on the street. These cabs do not have a uniform color or a taximeter. To arrange a pick-up by a livery cab, you must call a car service ahead of time. For a listing of licensed car services, also known as 'bases', please click here.
Important note: you must ask the car service's dispatcher for a fare quote before your trip. If you need to pay by credit card or would like a receipt, please make sure to inform the dispatcher ahead of time. How to Recognize a Licensed Cab
