Shinichi Osawa made his debut as the leader and bassist for Mondo Grosso, a band formed in Kyoto in 1991, with an eponymous album released in 1993 from For Life Records (Japan). In the heightened acid-jazz movement of the time, the album got great reviews and was well-received overseas as well. In 1995, after finishing off the tour following the release of the second album “Born Free,” the band was disbanded. Thereafter, Mondo Grosso has become a collaborative unit featuring Shinichi and various vocalists and musicians that he choosen to team up with.
In 1997, third album “Closer” was released around the same time that he began his career as a hit-making producer and produced hits such as “Rhythm” by UA and “You Make Me” by Monday Michiru, to name a few.
In 1999, he moved to Sony Music Associated Records Inc. and created his own label Realeyes. During the same year, Bird, fully produced by Shinichi Osawa as the very first artist from his label, had a massive hit selling well over 800,000 copies. As of the year 2000, he resumed activities as Mondo Grosso, now under his own weight, with the release of a highly-acclaimed masterwork album “MG4,” which included the smash hit “Life”.
In 2003, fifth album “Next Wave” was released. With a sales record of over 150,000 copies, which is extraordinary for a club music album, Shinichi truly triggered the “next wave” in Japan’s music scene, which has in one fashion or another, led onto The One.
Throughout his career Shinichi has played with various DJs from overseas such as Pete Tong, Switch, Mutiny, Tim Deluxe, Miss Kittin, Azzido Da Baa, 2many Djs, and James Murphy along with musically collaborating with various international artists.
In 2004, he produced “Samurai Theme” (later recorded in Fatboy Slim’s Mix CD “Fala ai!”) from Bob Sinclar’s Yellow Production compilation series “Africanism 3.” Shinichi also works closely with the French creators Kitsune – editing works of Christopher & Raphael Just/“Poper” and Boyz Noize/“Feel Good which became a worldwide club hit. His recent remix work has also taken to producing mixes across the musical spectrum for club superstars like Felix da Housecat, Digitalism and Tim Deluxe, through to chart pioneering acts such as Snow Patrol, Basement Jaxx and Jamiroquai.
The One is released by Southern Fried Records in January 2009. Shinichi will also then be touring the UK.
